Beautiful Dot Dot

It was my birthday last week, and i'd like to say thank you to my lovely family for making it a great few days. My dear sister and her beau made me this lovely picture of dot, I love it so much. He managed to get her chicky hair fluff in all it's glory.

I can't believe it, but its nearly that time for open studios. I've been busy shuffling around in my house sorting out pictures and deciding which ones to keep for the open studio event and which to send down to Honiton to show in the close to home exhibition. Please come and visit me from the 4th to the 18th of september (closed sundays and mondays) at 22 - 23 Butchers Row, Bideford Pannier Market, EX39 2DR. They have produced an amazing catalogue which is full of Devon Artists and craftspeople and can be picked up from most galleries and Tourist Information centres in Devon, if you would like me to post you one please let me know. My favourite is a lady called Rah Rivers, find out more about her work here. This piece is called Angel and his love and i will most certainly be taking a trip down to rattery to view hers and lydia corbetts work.

I've got 4 pieces of work on display in the Westward Ho! and Bideford Art Society annual summer exhibtion. Its a really interesting show of local people's work. My mum is exhibiting too, she will be taking part in the Devon Open Studios as well in September. Shes a collage artist, she makes her pictures from cut up pieces of magazines.
Real Nappies have been on my mind lately, I decided to get some and give it a go, but when i started looking i realised what a nappy minefield i was in. Pockets, wraps, bamboo and hemp inserts, aplix or poppers, what on earth does all this jargon mean?? Also the brands a tots bots bamboozle or a organic, a bum genius or a wonderoo? I've spent many hours this week perusing nappy websites and in the end i decided to bite the biscuit and buy some bum genius pocket nappies, only once i had done this i realised i'd purchased the V3 and the V4 will shortly be with us, AGGGHHHHHH!!! Don't ask me the difference between V3 and V4. Why are they so expensive? All it is, is a bit of fabric why can they cost up to £20 for 1 nappy??? If anyone can recommend a nappy then all help is muchly appreciated.
Also Dot Dot is crawling. Its amazing how fast they learn, one day she wasn't the next she was. Our house is danger central, everywhere i look i see another accident waiting to happen, i can't even leave her for 2 minutes to go the loo unless i barricade her in somewhere. I found her the other day swinging the paint scraper around and chewing on a bit of old wallpaper. I've not been being to creative lately but would like to go to the art school and do an evening class in ceramics. I was looking at the Reg Lloyd collection in the Burton the other day and felt totally inspired to go and make some sgraffito pots and staffordshire dogs.

Changing rooms

So this is how we're living at the moment, not very inspiring, almost depressing. I get these moments at the beginning of a project, when I think this will be easy, in a couple of weeks it will be done and dusted and we'll be living in a palace! I ripped off all the wallpaper and then i started chipping away at the artex on the ceiling. Halfway through i realised what a mammoth task i had undertaken and suddenly thought, "I should have finished some of the other rooms before i started this". If only i could just paint it, Bill who is usually right says we must fill and sand every wall, even the ceiling! So yes this is pretty much the state of the whole house at the moment, not one room finished. I will keep you posted on any major changes ( I wish). Just thought i'd show you this picture. The words are from a song by the Be Good Tanyas. Blue Horse is one of those albums you can keep coming back to and it never gets old.

My sailors left me.

We have just arrived home from the craft mecca of Devon, that is Bovey Tracey. What a wonderful weekend, an amazing show and lots of lovely people to boot. Its so good to meet people that appreciate the work and to have talked about myself for 3 solid days! My ego has been nicely plumped. As you can see i was going for the front room vibe with my stand which i think worked but could of done with one extra birdy to go on the small wall.

This little guy was one of my newest pictures and i was feeling particularly happy about this piece, quite a few people showed an interest in it and it went to the lovely rachel eardley in the end I'm gonna miss that guy hopefull we'll meet again in the back of a riot van with you swinging from the wall. It has inspired me to go on and explore our maritime heritage that we have here in Bideford and have a good look at sea shanties and poems, the world is my oyster!

Some new pictures for Laura and Sara

Here are some pictures for you ladies that have asked ever so politely to see, and i'm sorry that i'm always a bit sheepish about sharing and showing but i don't take compliments well and just get a bit overwhelmed when people are actually interested in what i do. So i guess this blog is a bit like therapy for me because it makes me sit down and tell you people about my pictures and i do find it quite hard. So the first is called Bucket Tree. When we were in Dorset we visited a beach (can't remember which one now) and there was a house right next to the beach and in the garden was a big tree where they had hung all the left over buckets and spades from the beach. It was so lovely and somewhere on my computer i have the photo which i can't for the life of me find, but you'll just have to take my word because it was far more beautiful then my picture could portray and such a lovely sight. A big green bushy tree full with bright pinks, blues and yellows.

Apologies for bad photos. This is one of my favourite quotes which i use quite a lot its such a lovely sentiment. I particularly like this one because i started it when i was quite heavily pregnant and its all pinks and blues ( I didn't know if i was having a girl or a boy). The tree trunk and branch material was bought from Donna's open house see her website here

These pictures used to be one long one, and have been on the go for quite a while (at least 2 years). Not that i've been sewing them for 2 years, they get started and then if i get stuck i put them away in a cupboard then a few weeks or months later i'll look at them again, well this went on forever and i was never happy with it. After what seemed like my 90th attempt at this picture i threw it down in a strop, Bill asked what the matter was and i told him and then he quite simply said "why don't you cut it in half?" So now this one picture is in two and they are living in separate frames, so no sound will get through now. These two pictures should be hung together but maybe at different heights or one creeping around a corner.

Bovey here we come.

I'm at that waiting stage now where i can't make anymore pictures because i haven't got time to get them framed so im filling my spare time making small brooches and baby cats. Here are some i'm working on at the moment. Im feeling particularly pleased about the yellow badge at the top, i acquired the fabric from a charity shop in south molton, its only a very small scrap so i might keep this one for myself. Please join the crafts at Bovey Tracey facebook page

What a joy to be a mum.

Ok, so i mean it this time, I will write my blog once a week. I'd gotten behind because this happened.

But now we're in a routine and shes tucked up in bed by 7.30 it gives me back some time to catch up on things. So this is the first time in 5 months that i've looked at it and its still here and i have SEVEN followers! I can't believe that i have 7 people interested in my thinkings so this is for you 7 (if you're still out there).

What a joy to be a mum. People always tell you about the bad stuff, the hideous labour and birth, the sleepless nights, no time to yourself, which is all very true but in return for these bad things you are given something so special, beautiful and precious it can't be put into words. It is also another character to inspire new pictures! I am currently working on a piece called "my tiny hands" which pretty much does as it says. Will post when finished.

Oh and before you call social services i would just like to add that my husband used to be an acrobat in the circus and there is a safety net (just outside of the picture).
